Where to Retire in Colorado

With its unbeatable scenery, great homes, senior-friendly neighborhoods, and all-around incredible quality of life, it’s not hard to see why so many retirees make the move to Colorado.

That said, Colorado is a big place, and finding the right community for you can be challenging if you don’t know where to kick off your search. As a real estate agent who has been helping clients downsize and retirees live their best lives for more than two decades (and a lifetime Colorado local), I’m here to help!

Why Should You Retire in Colorado?

There’s a lot to love about Colorado, especially as an empty nester or in your golden years. Retirement is a shift towards a new lifestyle that lets you spend more time doing what you enjoy – and there’s lots to enjoy out here!

Of course, Colorado is known for its incredible scenery and landscapes. The iconic Rocky Mountains, rolling plains, and lush forests create a serene backdrop for your retirement.

Along with serving up great views, Colorado’s natural landscape is also an unmatched outdoor playground. With activities such as hiking, golfing, skiing, fishing, and camping right at your doorstep, it’s easy to see why so many retirees have their eyes set on the Centennial State.

Not to mention, Colorado is one of the sunniest places in the entire country. With over 300 days of sunshine a year on average, there’s plenty of opportunity to get outside and enjoy your surroundings.

Where Should Retirees Live in Colorado?

There are several great places to live in Colorado, but which communities are best for retirees? A great place to look is the South Denver Metro area – which is chalked full of incredible lifestyle-oriented neighborhoods that offer unique perks and amenities to ensure your golden years are as enjoyable as possible.

Here are a few of my picks for Colorado’s best areas for retirees and empty nesters.

Pradera

If you’re looking for a neighborhood that offers a little bit of everything, Pradera should be on your radar. Nestled in Parker, Colorado, Pradera is a master-planned community that perfectly balances luxury and leisure.

Known for its award-winning golf course, The Club at Pradera, the neighborhood is a paradise for retirees who are looking to maximize their time on the links. However, if you’re not into golf, The Club at Pradera is also a community hub where you can connect with neighbors, relax, get some exercise, or play tennis and pickle ball.

The Village at Castle Pines

Considered to be one of the most exclusive residential communities in all of Colorado, The Village at Castle Pines is a close-knit neighborhood tucked away in scenic Castle Rock, CO.

The crown jewel of Castle Pines Village is its two private, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses – Country Club at Castle Pines and the invite-only Castle Pines Golf Club. Limited in memberships, these courses and their adjoining country clubs draw retirees who are looking for a refined community atmosphere.

Beyond being a haven for avid golfers, The Village at Castle Pines offers stunning homes, panoramic views and incredible amenities.

The Timbers

Located in Douglas County, southeast Denver, The Timbers is a tranquil community surrounded by lush greenery and rolling landscapes. Built into the luxurious Pinery Golf and Country Club area, The Timbers offers a secluded and peaceful setting for retirees and empty nesters who value privacy and natural beauty without losing access to certain upscale amenities.

Sitting right at the edge of the Rockies, The Timbers is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and of course, golf.

Willow Springs

Nestled in quiet Morrison, Colorado, Willow Springs is a hidden treasure for retirees who want a mix of nature and refined living. This community is set against the stunning backdrop of Red Rocks Park, known for its unique rock formations and famous outdoor amphitheater.

Willow Springs is home to the Red Rocks Country Club, featuring a scenic golf course and a variety of social and sports activities. Residents can also explore over 800 acres of private open space, perfect for hiking, biking, and wildlife observation. The community’s proximity to downtown Denver and the ski resorts adds an extra layer of convenience and entertainment for retirees.

Colorado Golf Club

Named after the local golf and residents’ club, Colorado Golf Club is another sought-after community among outdoorsy retirees. Distinctly private, this gated neighborhood is known for its spacious luxury homes and championship golf course, which has hosted several PGA events and is frequently ranked among the country’s best.  This community offers luxury at it’s finest.
